Hawthorne Valley Homeowners Association Trash, Recycling and Yard Waste Procedures

Hawthorne Valley has a collection contract with WCA Waste Corporation.  WCA provides pickup service on Friday, except for the weeks of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day, Pickup will occur on Saturday of those weeks.  Pickup may be as early as 6:30 a.m.  Following are the guidelines specified by WCA.

TRASH

WCA will collect trash only in the 64 gallon containers (black lid) that they provide.  The trash container should be placed at the curb with the handle facing away from the streetShould you have more trash than will fit into the container, they will collect bagged trash that has one of their stickers attached.  These stickers may be purchased  from  T & C  over the phone at (816) 380-5595 or by mail at P. O. Box 10, Harrisonville, Mo. 64701.

RECYCLE      

WCA will collect recycles only in the 64 gallon containers (blue lids) that they provide.    Bins should be placed at the curb for pickup with the handles facing away from the street.  The materials they recycle are listed below.  Anything not listed is considered to be trash by WCA.

     Acceptable Commingled Recycle Materials

1.      Paper Products

Newspapers(no plastic bags), magazines, junk mail and catalogs, telephone books, manila folders, advertising inserts, office paper, brochures, corrugated cardboard (boxes flattened), carrier stock (cardboard soft drink and beer cartons), chipboard (cereal, shoe etc.), paper and hardback books, cardboard egg cartons, pizza boxes (no food)and shredded paper secured in paper bags

2.      Plastic Products

All containers must be rinsed and contain no food.  Lids and rings should be removed from bottles.  Note that styrofoam is not accepted.  For a detailed description of common recyclable plastics, see “TIPS” below.

3.      Metal Products

Aluminum and steel (tin) cans are the usual items in this group.  All should be rinsed and contain no food.

Unacceptable Restricted Materials
  WCA will not accept the following materials for recycle.  They should betreated as trash.

1.      Miscellaneous items

Household hazardous material or automotive petroleum product containers, plastic bags, gift wrap, blueprints, hanging file folders, aseptic containers, paper cups and plates, tissue paper, paper towels, photographs, pet food bags, fertilizer bags, charcoal bags, cat litter bags and styrofoam.

2.      Glass

T & C does not recycle glass due to safety reasons.  As an alternative, homeowners are encouraged to recycle their glass food and beverage containers by taking them to glass collection locations.  The two closest are:

YARD WASTE         

Yard waste must be in paper bags or bundles in a separate curb location from trash.  Tree limbs should be no longer than 4 feet in length and less than 2 inches in diameter.  Yard waste service is not provided in January, February or March.  There is an 8 (bag or bundle) limit per week from April through August and in December.  There is no limit in September, October and November.

ADDITIONAL SERVICE

WCA will pick up larger items on their regular service day provided that they are notified at least 48 hours in advance.  Call (816) 380-5595.

  1. They will pick up one bulky item per month per household at no charge on the regular service day.  Typical items would include a chair, barbeque grill or a small table.  No construction debris, rock, or dirt will be accepted.
  2. Appliances such as water heaters, dishwashers and washing machines will be removed for a $20 fee charged to the homeowner.
  3.  Scrap Metal. WCA does not recycle scrap metal.  WCA considers it as trash.  The Overland Park Recycle Center at 11921 Hardy does accept scrap metal items.

All containers must be rinsed and contain no food or other material.  All caps and rings (although
recyclable) must be removed from bottles.  Lids must be removed from containers.
